来週ですよね?ああ、焦りました。今日は16日。カレンダーを眺め、新聞の日付を確認。^^;

<Language in the U.S.> 1

What is the "(2語******** ********)" of the U.S.? Although most people (思う****** )that it is English, which is of course the most( ****** )language, there is no( ******* )at all in the U.S. Constitution of any (3語******** ******** ********.) The U.S. ******** under a federal system where most powers and decisions are (2語****** ****) to the state level. It is thus up to each state to decide its own(2語 ******** *********.) Currently, however, only about half of the states have laws that declare English as their(2語 ******** ********. )The most recent of these is West Virginia, where such a law was just (****** )in April 2005.

It seems only natural to some that a country as (*******) as the U.S. should not have an official language. (H***********), even before the first European settlers arrived in(3語 **** ** ***) the United States , over 300 Native American languages were spoken there. So it has indeed been a land of (多言語主義15文字**********) since long ago. These days, there are nearly as many languages spoken by the many (2語 ********* ********** )throughout the U.S. Some of the most commonly spoken languages other than English in the U.S. include Spanish, Chinese, (V*********) and (T******).
In fact, a recent (******) showed that 18% of Americans do not speak English at home. That is almost (3語*** ** ****) people!

(C********), many types of public services in the U.S. in locations such as (******) and (*********) are provided in dozens of different languages. Forty or fifty years ago, most (**********) had to learn to speak English to (******:) and avoid (*********). As a result, many of them spoke to their children at home in English even though they were not (******) speakers. Could you imagine having to communicate with your own children in a (*******) language? Many people nowadays, however, think that (********) have the right to be (********) access to (*******) services in their native languages. Many schools even offer (*********)l education programs so that children of (***********) can learn both English and the language of their (********) in school. This is especially (******) with Spanish.

On the other hand, there are numerous supporters of what is called (the E****** *** M*******). They are trying to make English the official language across the entire country. In fact, they have introduced (***********) in (C*******) many times over the past several decades to make English the official language. But, these proposed laws, or bills, have never had enough support to (****). The supporters argue that making English the official language would help the (**********) save on (********) and (***********) costs. They also think that it would (*********) newly arrived immigrants to quickly learn to speak English.

1.******:Stuffed pastry that is either boiled or fried that was popular in the U.S. by Polish immigrants.

2.*******: An idiot

3.******:To carry or drag something with much effort.

4.*****: A clumsy person

5.Y******:A German dialect with influences from Hebrew spoken by Jews in Eastern Europe. Hundreds of thousands of Yiddish speakers immigrated to the U.S. during the 20th century.
